Our Process
Our Process
Pergolaguy.com Process
Stage 1: Project Feasibility/Initial Design Consultation (Typically 30-45 min)
During the initial design consultation, we assess whether your project is viable based on your preferences and local regulations. If the project is feasible, we proceed with an estimate. If not, we part ways amicably and offer guidance, as setbacks, codes, or municipal restrictions may prevent some homeowners from getting a pergola.
Stage 2: Design & Estimate (Typically 30-45 min)
We collaborate closely with homeowners and businesses to create a custom design that aligns with your preferences and site-specific requirements. This process typically takes 1 to 2 hours. For commercial projects, more time may be required, but this varies.
Stage 3: Project Acceptance
Once a client approves the price and initial design, we move forward. A payment of $500 or the engineering fee (whichever is greater) is required at this point. Payment can be made via check, cash, credit card, ACH, or through our 12-month same-as-cash program.
Stage 4: Formal Design (1 week)
This stage typically takes about a week as our design team creates detailed shop drawings/client drawings. These include important elements such as drainage, unit height, elevations, louver orientation, connection details, and post placement.
Permit Only Path
Permit Only Path: Stage 5A - Permit Application (1-2 days)
After the formal design is finalized and signed off, we move forward to apply for the necessary permits. We notify you at each milestone throughout the process.
Permit Only Path: Stage 6A - Site-Specific Engineering & Permit Submission (3 weeks)
For the permit-only path, we complete site-specific engineering tailored to your location and project, ensuring that your structure will be sound and compliant with local regulations. The engineering process takes approximately three weeks and is submitted to the local municipality’s permit office for approval.
Permit Only Path: Stage 7A - Permit Approval & Production (3-4 weeks)
Once the permit has been approved by the local municipality, we proceed to order the materials and begin production. The manufacturing process typically takes 3 to 4 weeks to complete.

HOA + Permit Path
HOA + Permit Path: Stage 5B - HOA Approval
Before proceeding with permits, we first submit the formal design to the HOA for approval. Since HOA approval is essential to the project’s continuation, we do not move forward with any permit submissions until we have their approval. HOA approval timelines vary depending on their meeting schedule.
HOA + Permit Path: Stage 6B - Site-Specific Engineering & Permit Submission (3 weeks)
After HOA approval, we complete site-specific engineering, tailored to your location and project, ensuring structural soundness. This process takes approximately three weeks. Once completed, the design is submitted to the local municipality for permit approval.
HOA + Permit Path: Stage 7B - Permit Approval & Production (3-4 weeks)
Once the permits are approved by the local municipality, we order the materials and move into production. Production typically takes 3 to 4 weeks before shipping the materials to the project site.

HOA Path (No Permit)
HOA Path (No Permit): Stage 5C - HOA Approval & Next Step
If no permits are required, we submit the formal design to the HOA for approval. Once approved, this project moves directly to the next stage.
HOA Path (No Permit): Stage 6C - Decision Matrix (Engineering Yes or No)
Once HOA approval is received, we determine if engineering is needed. If the homeowner elects for engineering, all relevant site-specific engineering details are applied. If not, the project will proceed without engineering. Regardless, nothing moves forward until HOA approval is granted. Site-specific engineering takes approximately 3 weeks.
HOA Path (No Permit): Stage 7C - Production (3-4 weeks)
Once the site-specific engineering is complete, the project moves into production. Production typically takes 3 to 4 weeks.

No HOA, No Permit Path
No HOA, No Permit Path: Stage 5D - Straight to Next Stage
If neither permits nor HOA approval is required, the project moves directly into the next stage.
No HOA, No Permit Path: Stage 6D - Decision Matrix (Engineering Yes or No)
If the homeowner elects to get engineering, the process takes approximately three weeks. If they decide not to proceed with engineering, the project moves directly into production. Keep in mind that engineering may still be required for more complex projects.
No HOA, No Permit Path: Stage 7D - Production (3-4 weeks)
Once the decision regarding engineering is made, the project moves into production. If engineering is selected, it adds three weeks to the process. Production typically takes 3 to 4 weeks.
